Nowhere is my, now dead, extremely long term single-player Source project. The original concept was devised between me and my friend Brian over a placemat on a diner for a single-player zombie mod that took place over different locations in a ruined city. We could use existing characters in different roles along the course of the storyline, and focus heavily on atmosphere to deliver the mood. Brian had priorities in his life at the time, so had to part with the project, but having invested so much mental energy into devising layouts and gameplay mechanics, I went ahead anyway.
The life cycle of this game was sort of ridiculous, and its death really had nothing to do with the overwhelming odds or the amount of work. I'm no stranger to hard work. The project had been started when I was a good at mapping, but sloppy. The levels, despite being pretty, were hard to optimize, had enormous file sizes, and had loose custom assets that were hard to keep track of. I wasn't running a very tight ship, and I should have been.
I could theoretically go back and start from square one (again) and do things cleaner, but I think that would just be beating a dead horse. Nowhere has been a pretty epic strain over the years, and as much as I would have loved to seen the release, its sort of a relief to not have to worry about such a cumbersome project.
I never like walking away from projects empty-handedly, however, and I'm making sure that the community isn't either on this. So, in return for closing the doors on Nowhere, I've decided to release all the source material I've had so far. There will be a lot of missing textures, models, and errors, as I never packed the maps up for release. Some of the maps are obviously unfinished. But you can get a chance to take a look at the levels, learn from things that were successful and mistakes I made, and use it to better your own work. I don't expect credit, although if you're going to actually use the material for a project of your own, I'd very much appreciate it.
I'll make it up to you guys. I already have a new, better, more managable (releasable) project in the works that I hope you guys will like when I'm ready to show it.
Zombies are overdone, anyway :)
